Sustainability Policy Statement

Purpose and Scope

This policy declares KpH’s commitment to sustainable development in all aspects of design, procurement, construction, refurbishment, operations, and maintenance. It sets out responsibilities, standards, and performance expectations to ensure compliance with UK legislation, relevant ISO / British / European / industry standards, and best practice, while striving for continual improvement in environmental, social, and economic performance.

This policy applies to all employees, contractors, suppliers, and partners engaged by KpH in the UK.

Legal Compliance & Risk Management
Ensuring full compliance with all applicable UK laws, regulations, statutory requirements, and planning obligations related to sustainability, environmental protection, health and safety, and building standards.

Environmental Stewardship

  • Minimising carbon emissions (both embodied & operational).
  • Managing energy, water, and other natural resource use efficiently.
  • Reducing waste, promoting reuse, recycling, and responsible material sourcing.
  • Protecting biodiversity, soil, air and water quality.

Respecting the rights, health, safety, and wellbeing of workers, communities, and other stakeholders.

Enhancing social value through local employment, skill development, fair working conditions.

Economic Sustainability

  • Considering whole-life cost, durability, adaptability, and resilience in design and procurement decisions.
  • Encouraging innovation in sustainable building methods and materials.
  • Ensuring value for clients and stakeholders without compromising environmental or social objectives.

Transparency & Accountability

  • Setting measurable Environmental and Sustainability objectives, monitoring, reporting, and reviewing performance.
  • Engaging with stakeholders (clients, communities, suppliers, regulators) to ensure shared understanding and collaboration.
  • Embedding sustainability in decision-making at all levels.

Relevant Legislation & Regulatory Requirements

  • Building Regulations (England & Wales / analogous devolved administrations), especially Part L (Conservation of fuel & power), Part F (Ventilation), Part O (Overheating), etc.
  • The Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions commitment under the Climate Change Act 2008 (as amended) and the UK’s statutory carbon budgets.
  • Environment Act 2021 (air quality, biodiversity, water, waste, resource efficiency).
  • The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) – health, safety, welfare.
  • Waste regulations (Waste Duty of Care, Hazardous Waste Regulations).
  • Environmental Permitting Regulations.
  • UK Timber Procurement Policy; requirements around legal & sustainable forestry.
  • Public Services (Social Value) Act 2012 – where relevant to procurement/contracting.

Standards, Certifications & Industry Expectations

To meet and exceed industry expectations, KpH will align with the following standards and frameworks (as applicable):

ISO 14001 – Systematic approach to managing environmental risks, compliance and continuous improvement

ISO 45001 – Ensuring safe working environments

British Standards / EN Standards – Sustainability of construction works, e.g. EN 15801, EN 15942, EN 15978

 

  • Trustee Board / Senior Leadership Team: Endorse this policy; provide leadership and resources; ensure accountability.
  • SHEQ Director: Coordination of policy implementation; monitoring and reporting; ensuring compliance; stakeholder liaison.
  • Project Managers / Operations Directors: Ensure each project complies; integrate lifecycle thinking; select sustainable materials; control site impacts.
  • Procurement Team: Embed sustainability criteria; vet suppliers; ensure responsible sourcing.
  • All Employees / Contractors: Adhere to requirements; report issues; seek to reduce environmental and social impact in their work.

Review & Continual Improvement

  • This policy will be reviewed at least annually, and whenever there are changes in legislation, standards, industry best practice, or organisational context.
  • Lessons learned from each project will feed into policy improvements and process updates.
  • Senior management will conduct a periodic (e.g. annual) review of performance against targets, and adjust resources or strategy as needed.
