National Apprenticeship Week 2026 – Build Skills. Dismantle Limits.
Apprenticeships are often associated with those starting their careers, however, they also represent an opportunity for those looking to enhance their skills or to retrain and change career. To mark National Apprenticeship Week, we spoke to apprentice Aaron Matthews who is doing a Demolition Operative (Level 2) Apprenticeship, about his journey so far.
Why did you choose an apprenticeship and why now?
I was at a point in my life where I was wanting to learn new skills and gain new experiences and the apprenticeship route seemed a really good fit.
What were your expectations and how does it compare in reality?
I was looking forward to developing new practical skills and obtaining on-the-job training and it has delivered on both counts!
How does it feel returning to learning?
Initially the thought of returning to learning at this stage in my life was daunting. But I’ve realised that you’re never too old to learn something new.
What skills from your previous career have helped you the most in this role?
Communication is a key skill in any career and it’s been a really valuable transferable skill for me. By listening carefully to my mentors and team members I’ve been able to take in important information and ask the questions I need to progress and strengthen my skills.
What new skills have you developed?
I’ve learnt to operate hand-held and powered tools and equipment safely and efficiently on site. Alongside this I’ve learned about the necessary health and safety and environmental procedures and protocols to follow.
How have your colleagues supported you?
I’ve been supported by a brilliant team who have years of experience working on demolition and deconstruction projects. They have helped me develop the essential skills whilst always prioritising safety and quality.
What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?
Do it! The skills you will gain will be invaluable for the future and will open up so many opportunities for your personal and professional development. It’s never too late to start your journey.
What are your goals for the future?
To continue to enhance my skills and achieve my recognised certification so I can progress in a career in deconstruction.
Apprenticeships provide an opportunity to earn while you learn and combine learning with relevant hands-on experience.
At KpH we offer the Demolition Operative (Level 2) Apprenticeship. It is a two year programme with the opportunity to gain a recognised certification – CCDO Demolition and Refurbishment Operative (valid for 5 years).
